Skating instead of going to school I have to mention one
other way of skating on natural ice. One can also make unorganized tours. The
problem is that in that case one can end up on places where the ice is not
strong enough and accidents may occur. I will report some later.
One tour I have done very often you can see on the map. We lived close to the “Olympisch Stadion” (left at the top) and the aim of the tour was the lake called “De Poel” (at the bottom of the map). Find the route noting that one has to cross roads occasionally. It is a nice tour and the result is rewarding because it is a typical Dutch lake (see below) that provides enough space for some speed skating.. |
Skipping school for skating |
This tour has a special meaning to me because every time
when the ice period ended I skipped school and made this trip to the Poel.
Fortunately to me, the person who was in charge of control of the presence of
the students was also a fanatic skater and on these days I always met him on this
tour. We spoke with each other and were sorry that the skating period was over. I never got a punishment for skipping school. Probably because he understood
my motivation very well and was guilty himself as well.
