In the 15th century Hieronimus Bosch painted this famous bird on skates. This indicates that, already in the 15th century, people in the Netherlands were skating. The history of this sport is interesting in itself and, without a doubt, for the social context.
The author of this website, Willem Saris, started skating on skates similar to those painted by Bosch and became, at an early age, a big fan of skating and all events related to this sport. Soon a book will appear about the History of Speed skating from a Dutch perspective. Moree information is available at the left side of this page |
