Sven Kramer
Sven Kramer was born on 23 April 1986. He became the most successful long track speed skater of The Netherlands and probably of the world. He started in 2005 to participate in the world champion all-round. The first two times he ended on the third place behind Davis and Hedrick. In 2006 he got again bronze medal behind the same skaters of the USA.
In 2007 he won for the first time the gold medal and repeated this nine times of the 10 times that he participated. He also won 10 times gold at the European all-round championships. |
He became also 8 times world champion in a new discipline “team pursuit”. In the video below we see Sven Kramer skating against Shani Davis in a 5000 m race and in his team during a team pursuit race which is a race between two teams of 3 skaters of each country
lHis biggest frustration has been that he did not win in the Olympic games the gold medal on the 10.000m in Vancouver in 2010. He wanted to win this medal because he did not have this medal so far. He had prepared well and race went well but at one moment his coach sent him to the inside lane while he had to stay at the outside which he had already correctly chosen. He thought that he had won this gold medal given his time till he was told that he was disqualified because choosing the wrong lane. However this was really a luxury problem given the amount of gold he had already won.
Speaking about money I found in the internet infomation about his salary. It was suggested to be 108.000 euros a month. This was close to the amount of money I received as a professor at the University of Amsterdam in a year.
I suppose that his salary was not always that high but probably in the last years he received this salary. He was also known as millionaire by skating. It shows that skating was so successful and so popular in The Netherlands that there were enough sponsors who were willing to pay large amounts of money to share in this success of the skaters which was viewed by nearly the whole population..
