Skating in the 20th century
The 20th century has been characterized by three different forms of speed skating. The most popular skating event in the Netherlands was definitely the 200 km race and endurance test called "Elfstedentocht" . This heroic event happened only once in the 15 years. Maybe therefore it was also so popular.
Because this event took place so infrequently other skating competicions were organized under the name "marathon skating" . These races happened on natural ice often outside the Netherlands or on articial ice in the different skating rinks.
Finally through the whole century so called " longs track" speed skating championships were held in different forms. There were championships on different distances: 500m ,1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and 10.000m and there were Allround championships where a classification was made over 4 distances which have varied over the years. I have in this context concentrated on the Allround championships.
