Skating after 2000
.Most of the skating that was going on before 2000 has been continued. However there were two fundamental differences which were related with the climat change. First of all it was not possible any more to organize the 200km long "Elfstdentocht" on natural ice in The Netherlands. It is a pitty that this heroic race can not be held anymore. A connected change was that skating on inline skates became much more popular than it had been in the last century.
An interesting development in all forms of skating was that the professionallization increased and as a consequence in each dicipline some countries became so specialized that they collected nearly all medals.
Another important issue was that long track and short track speed skating were recognized as Olympic sports while inline skating was not recognized as such. Given the prestige of participating and being succesful in the Olympic games there has been a lot of inline skaters which also have tried to compete in long track speed skating to realize a participation in the Olympic games.
The last two issues have led in long track speed skating to the introduction of new speed skating diciplines such as the "mass start" ,the "team pursuit" and the "team sprint". Especially inline speed skaters moved to long track speed skating in order to participate in the Olympic games. For some of them it was possible to compete and win in classical long track races, for others the new diciplines offered them the opportunitu¡y to participate on a high level in long track speed skating during the Olympic games.and world championships.
Below first we will report about the classical diciplines in the diffferent sports and alter that we pay attention to the new diciples which have been introduced
