An other speed skating club: Roller Can Cuyás
Jorge Fernandez and Willem Saris
Completely differently from the Club Pati Barcelona another speed skating club came to live in the district Can Cuyás of Montcada de Reixac. In 2010 three friends Jorge Fernandez, Fran Sanz and Jose Comacho, living in this area participated in skating classes and Friday night skating of the APB and skated through the streets by themselves. Jorge liked it a lot and developed a plan to start classes for the children and their parents in the area, a real family activity as was expressed in the logo of the club.

The start
The club was started at 4 October 2011. It immediately turned out to be a big success, 150 people subscribed as a member. In the first two years more than 200 people participated in these activities especially children with their parents came to the activities. So many people participated that the initiators of the club needed help of several more people, Jesus, Yoli, Agata, Cristina and Ray during the training hours and to organize the club. |
Participation in the 24 hours of Calafat
In 2013 Jorge wanted to participate in the 24 hours Roller tour of Calafat as member of a team of APB. To prepare for that, he participated in the training under supervision of Mateu Capel of the Club Pati Barcelona. He enjoyed these trainings and the participation in the 24 hours endurance test so much that he wanted to participate in such activities also with the members of his own club. So in 2014 a team of skaters of Roller Can Cuyás started to train for this event in 2014. This was the start of the speed skating activities of the club Roller Can Cuyás.

Speed skating for kids
A year later they also started with speed skating for the kids. This activity was professionalized under supervision of Roger Valverdu, one of the best speed skaters of Spain.
The club became member of the Catalan Skating federation and started to participate in the championships that were organized in the region and outside Catalunya. Here we see a photo of the speed skaters in the Jocs Escolari .

Each year more activities
In 2015 the number of activities was sharply increased by extra school activities for different schools and at the same time by activities for children at risk of social exclusion.
Also the older skaters started to participate in marathons and other races with success.
The participants show in all events their enthusiasm for the sport and their increased capabilities as can be seen on the photo .

This has attracted many more participants. In total more than 500 people have participated in the activities of the club.
What is missing?
The only problem is that there is no proper skating track in Barcelona. The kids skate in the covered field for football. The speed skaters have moved, as the CPB did, to the plaza Willy Brandt which is so far possibly the best place for speed skating in Barcelona but as we have mentioned before the plaza is not perfect and often the plaza is used for other purposes.
