Marathon skating on ice
I suppose that it is very clear to the readers of my website that the Dutch people goes on the ice as soon as it seems possible whether that is true or not. This has been so as far we know during the last 6 centuries. In the 14th till the 17th century there was a small ice age in Western Europe so there was plenty of time to skate. In later centuries the possibilities were still sufficiently available to keep the tradition a life. But since the middle of the last century the possibilities are considerably reduced by the climate change. This required new ideas about skating. One is going to other countries to skate but another solution is to create artificial ice for skating. This has indeed been done and this development has created new forms of skating and skating competitions. One development was what has been called “Marathon skating”. In this section we want to introduce this development.
Because I have never been involved in speed skating competitions myself but my friend Egbert Lambers knows a lot of these competitions I have asked him to help me to create this section.
